Korkyra Melania – Korkyra Nigra – Korcula
Korcula holds a privileged position among the Croatian islands. There are more legends, tales, and monuments here than anywhere else. One of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Mediterranean, Korcula is instantly recognizable. Its red-roofed houses and stunning walled-in old town jut out into the sea. Korcula is also one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic and has marvelous natural scenery. Korcula sits on the edge of nature. Look forward to rolling hills for hiking and cycling. Of course, Korcula boasts a gorgeous seaside, with a variety of pebbly and sandy beaches. Lumbarda, a quaint fishing village, is another highlight. The island’s position in the Adriatic makes it an ideal stopover when traveling between Dubrovnik and Hvar. It’s a pleasant destination for a several-day stay.

The name Korcula comes from the Greek name for this island which was Korkyra Melania. The first Greek settlers of Korcula came from the island of Corfu, and Corfu in Greek is Korkyra. When they first saw Korcula, the Greeks were amazed by the dense forests which made the island look almost black. Hence they named it Korkyra Melania, which translates as Black Corfu. Later, during the rule of the Romans, the island was called Korkyra Nigra.

Korcula, Marco Polo’s hometown!
Highlights of the old town of Korcula include the Cathedral of St. Marco and Marco Polo’s original home. The island produces some of the finest white wines in the region too. It’s a short trip away from the neighboring Peljesac peninsula. This area is famous for its high-quality wine, both red and white. Korcula is rich in culture and tradition, with a storied past dating back to ancient Greek times. If you are lucky during your stay, you will catch a Moreska performance. This is a spectacular combat dance conducted with swords and in heavy armor. Korcula is certainly one of the must-sees for travelers in Croatia. Whether you’re looking for a beach vacation, wine tasting, or just real relaxation, you’ll find it here.

We recommend getting to know Korcula’s old town with a private guide, to learn the history of the town itself and the island. After that there are plenty of ways to take advantage of Korcula’s prime position. If seeing more of the island is your desire, then a private driving tour of the island with a local is the only way to go!
