Smokvica (pronounced Smokvitza) is located about 30 kilometers from Korcula old town. A small village of about one thousand inhabitants on the southern slope of the surrounding hills, protected from Bura (unpleasant cold northern wind). History dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries when Slav tribes from the mainland arrived to find refuge from Ottoman attacks. Traces of life date back even to Illyrian times in Gradina (Smokvica suburb). Parish Church of The Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built end of 17th century and rebuilt beginning of 20th century.
